What is Ngau Chi Wan Market?

Ngau Chi Wan Market is a public market in east Kowloon. The FEHD lists it as a market with a cooked food centre, so one address gives you two things: a wet market for fresh food shopping, and a set of small stalls that cook meals to eat on the spot. It is one of the 93 public markets and cooked food markets or centres that the FEHD provides across Hong Kong.

The market shares its street address with the Ngau Chi Wan Municipal Services Building. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre is on the 2nd and 3rd floors of that building, and Ngau Chi Wan Public Library is also inside it.

Where it is and how to get there

The market sits on Clear Water Bay Road, which runs along the eastern edge of Choi Hung Estate. The nearest MTR station is Choi Hung, which serves the Ngau Chi Wan area. Our sources do not name a station exit, so check the exit map at the station or plan your trip with the government's HKeMobility route search, which the LCSD points visitors to.

What you can buy and eat

The FEHD publishes how many stalls trade in each category. These are the main food and shopping groups it lists for Ngau Chi Wan Market:

Stall type (FEHD)Stalls
Wet goods (fresh food)97
Dry goods83
Non-food dry goods29
Fish28
Food-related wet goods26
Cooked food14
Food-related dry goods12
Siu mei / lo mei (Cantonese roast and braised foods)4

The FEHD counts the stalls that currently sell each type of goods, so the numbers move as stalls open and close. Taken together, this is a big neighbourhood market where you can do a full week's food shop, buy dried and packaged goods, and pick up household items.

The cooked food centre has 14 cooked food stalls and keeps much longer hours than the market, from 6 am until 2 am. That makes it handy for an early breakfast or a late supper. If you like this kind of everyday cooking, read our guide to the cha chaan teng.

A short history of Ngau Chi Wan

Ngau Chi Wan (牛池灣) means "cattle pond bay". It was first the name of a bay below Hammer Hill in New Kowloon. Today the name covers the district where Choi Hung Estate stands.

Choi Hung Estate (彩虹邨, "rainbow estate") was built on land the government granted in 1958. Its 11 blocks, with about 7,400 flats, were finished between 1962 and 1964, and the opening ceremony was held in 1963.

The original Ngau Chi Wan Village still stands among the tower blocks. Many of its residents came as refugees from mainland China. In the 2019 and 2020 policy addresses, the Chief Executive said the government planned to take back the rest of the village to build high-density public housing.

Ngau Chi Wan is also one of the Hong Kong areas where tong lau are found. These are tenement buildings used for both homes and shops, built from the late 19th century to the 1960s. Nearby, the Sam Shan Kwok Wong Temple stands on Kwun Tong Road next to Ping Shek Estate, and a small flower fair is held outside it at the end of the lunar year. Ngau Chi Wan Park opened in 2011.
